"Gilead" is one of several winter paintings and is of the Sunday River Skiing area of Maine. This area is very popular for skiers all over the country. Near the Bethel area there are a variety of things to do but we go there just to see the beauty of the mountains, find new painting subjects, and to cross country ski. "Gilead" Beautiful, silent, serene, white-wintry silence; earth covered, blanketed, in a temporary annual coma 'til suns penetration warms into a new scene. Snow dunes pushed up and sunken in from frost heaves grip the tall, wavy grass in a frozen embrace. Apple trees planted in a row bare all, but no remaining fruit; fingers still stiffly stretch heavenward praying for some sun. Bright as bright can be; blues press the earth for dominion accentuating the mountains beyond. Winter is dominant, cold is evident, peace reigns.
