"Northeasterly" is a 60"x90" acrylic mural painting of Monhegan Island, Maine. Monhegan is 12 miles from New Harbor off the coast. This particular part of Monhegan shows it's rugged coastline towards the open ocean. About 75 year round residents live on Monhegan and the island is a very popular summer attraction for thousands of visitors. My wife looked at the painting and said it was disturbing. I asked her what she meant and she said, "it is disturbingly realistic to me since I've been out sailing in Maryland a good part of my life and have seen the ocean whip into identical choppiness as I see depicted in the Northeasterly mural. It's just so real!", a wife of an acquaintance once stated as she looked at a photo of the painting called Northeasterly. The black cliffs of Monhegan Island as seen approaching the island by water, from the Northeast, is the perspective of the mural sized painting. There is deliberate, intentional starkness to this coast of Maine scene. I wanted the onlooker of this 5'x9' mural to experience what it would have looked like as the explorers of the Maine coastline first came upon this island gem called Monhegan. Mark has enjoyed being a mural artist for over 25 years! |
