Murals "of, relating to, or resembling a wall" - Webster's definition. Mural sized paintings; larger than the average art sold on the market currently. Large enough to adorn a substantial portion of most building walls. I lean towards these mural sized paintings naturally. When commissioned to do some actual paintings on walls back in the late 70's I found the experience releasing, stimulating, and satisfying. It fit me like a glove. I then began buying large rolls of Belgian linen and started producing a series of mural sized paintings in conjunction with my other moderate sized work. The practical side of a painting 'for' a wall instead of 'on' a wall was so that I in Maine could do the mural sized painting, then roll it up, and ship it anywhere in the world: a transportable wall. The key word I used as a catalyst for doing these murals was 'intent'. I decided that unless I had a purpose and a goal firmly in place in my mind and heart, the work would be hollow; not vibrant, experiential, or engaging. The subject matter and composition is paramount to me. Mark Chesebro |
